Teranim Centre for Popular Arts

Mauritania
Teranim Centre For Popular Arts is an independent cultural institution founded in 2014 in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania — a country that forms a bridge between Arab and Sub-Saharan Africa. Mauritania possesses a rich and unique cultural heritage replete with folk and artistic practices that reflect the country’s cultural identity. But the absence of cultural policies or programs and an official national strategy has led to the loss of significant forms of intangible cultural heritage that jeopardizes the continuation of tradition. What remains is preserved through oral memory and individual or collective efforts. The center was established in this context as an independent cultural platform that contributes to the preservation of the country’s cultural diversity and the safeguarding and valorization of its intangible heritage, with a particular focus on folklore arts and practitioners. Among these, Madih Nabawi — songs in praise of the Prophet — stands out as one of the most profound and socially rooted art forms in Mauritania. Teranim organizes an annual Madih festival, whose 13th edition will take place during Ramadan 2026.
