Onions to Forget the Past

Emilien Awada  |  Documentary Film  |  2025  |  Lebanon
The filmmaker trains his lens on his parents, revisiting their early courtship during Lebanon’s civil war as they navigated differences of class, culture and religion that divided them. Using the secret letters they exchanged, he traces out the layers of a history of their intimacy as much as of Lebanon as a whole. Like Voltaire’s Candide, the director’s journey is one of slow disillusionment that brings him to the conclusion that he is an exile in his own country.
