Atiyat Archive is an archival project that will bring together around 50,000 visual documents about Egyptian documentary film pioneer Atiyat El Abnoudy. The archive has three aims. First, it looks to tell the life story of Abnoudy as a woman who came from a rural village and changed documentary filmmaking in Egypt from promotion to poetry, from propaganda to reality. It will also document the emergence of radically different narratives that strayed away from the unchallenged norms in arts and culture at the time. And finally it will look at the artistic approach of a director and producer who created 25 documentary films in a male-dominated field.
