AFAC Seeks a Beirut-based Deputy Director

The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture – AFAC is seeking a full-time, Beirut-based Deputy Director to assist and partner with the Executive Director to ensure AFAC’s consistent achievement of its vision, mission, and financial objectives. The Deputy Director will have both internal and external responsibilities, ranging from stakeholders and project management (business development, framing of key approaches, high-quality delivery, written products) to administration (information, reporting, facilities), and human capital (HR/recruitment, mentoring, career progression).

AFAC is open to profiles of all nationalities from the Arab region, as long as they are based in Beirut and meet the below-mentioned set of skills and experience.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Organization, working toward its goals;
  • Partner closely with the Executive Director to chart the Organization’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services;
  • Assist the Executive Director with strategic planning and coordination of the organization’s programs, projects, as well as with revising and evaluating existing programs;
  • Assist the Executive Director in helping to supervise and guide the various departments of the Organization, serving as the second-in-command of the group;
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders including reporting to donors and partners;
  • Represent the Organization and its work in conferences, professional meetings, and other public venues with the guidance of the Executive Director;
  • Partner with the Executive Director in essential internal leadership activities (human resources, administration, and organizational planning);
  • Manage the Organization in the absence of the Executive Director;
  • Work with the Executive Director to create broader initiatives within the Organization and follow up on the implementation of these ideas into practice in a team-oriented manner;
  • Seek opportunities for new partnerships that advance the Organization’s mission and impact and develop proposal ideas;
  • Develop and implement stakeholders’ convenings and reflections to strategize and review opportunities and challenges;
  • Fulfill other tasks assigned by the Executive Director;
  • Report to the Executive Director.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • 5+ years experience in a management position in a non-profit/civil society organization, foundation, or similar structures;
  • Deep knowledge of the social, political, and cultural landscape regionally;
  • Track record delivering superior results, commanding respect, and assuming leadership roles;
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities;
  • Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, humbleness, and good humor;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – junior and senior, for-profit and non-profit, and from diverse backgrounds;
  • Takes initiative and operates with excellence in mind in all matters, with the confidence to defend/debate ideas without ego interfering;
  • Excellent analytical written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills in teams of diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated abilities to practice leadership, encourage teamwork, and inspire team members;
  • Commitment to the Organization’s mission and core values of openness, transparency, collaboration, trust, and accountability;
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings;
  • Remains focused in the face of pressure, delivers against timelines, not intimidated by tasks/time limitations;
  • Fluent in Arabic and English;
  • Ability to travel to follow up on projects and/or represent the Organization in events, conferences, professional meetings, etc.
