Alaa Abd El Fattah is an Egyptian software developer, blogger, political activist, and writer. He is a prominent figure in Egypt’s digital and political landscape, known for his pioneering work in free and open-source software, Arabic-language computing, and digital activism. He co-founded the Egyptian Linux User Group (EGLUG) and the Egyptian Bloggers’ Collective. Throughout his career, he has provided technical support to radical and progressive initiatives. Alongside his tech contributions, he has become an international voice for democracy, having been active in the years leading up to and following the January 25 Revolution. His activism has led to multiple arrests, making him one of Egypt’s most prominent political prisoners. He is the author of You Have Not Yet Been Defeated, which has been translated into three languages and received international acclaim. He has also received prestigious awards, including the PEN Pinter Prize for a writer of courage and an Electronic Frontier Foundation award. His work brings together technology, art, and human rights in innovative ways.
