REEF Association

Lebanon

REEF emerged in 2018 through a collaboration between members of AFLAMUNA, a leading Arab cinema organization, and the Council of the Environment, an NGO dedicated to preserving Akkar's natural heritage. It evolved into an independent registered Lebanese non-profit association in the beginning of 2025. REEF is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing natural and cultural heritage through creative practices and grassroots engagement.

REEF operates through three interconnected programs: community engagement, knowledge and skills development and eco-rural narratives. The organization’s approach is grounded in community-based experimentation, collaboration, artistic expression and advocacy. REEF Encounters, held annually since 2018 across five Lebanese regions, aims to engage the public on critical environmental issues via screenings, discussions, educational hikes and hands-on workshops. With participation free of charge, these encounters support both local economies and cultural identity. The organization’s impact is also built through youth programs like REEF Ambassadors and community workshops focused on supporting women and local talents, promoting both ecological practices and content creation. REEF also supports artists through projects generating original stories that raise awareness across Lebanon.

REEF's team co-initiated the Rural & Cultural Network, connecting 90 entities across the country.
