A novel told by numerous narrators and set in an Egyptian Delta village. When the military invades the village to construct a military base on agricultural land, several villagers rise up in protest. The army, however, manages to quell the majority into silence by spreading rumors of an impending enemy threat from a neighboring village and reviving an ancient dispute.
