The main character of the novel narrates: “Up until this year, nothing worth mentioning happened in my life, because it is no more than an empty life,” as if the main character has nothing to tell us. However, he will unveil at a certain point one of his family secrets by telling the story of an old panhandler woman who knocked on their door in 1954-ten years before he was born- and predicted his birth by foretelling that the family will have nine children, including four males. Regarding the males she said, “…one will end up an oppressor, the second a scientist, the third a blind man and the fourth will be fired…” Through this vision, or rather tragedy, the family will live in constant worry
