Samandal is a volunteer-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art of comics in Lebanon and around the world. Founded in Lebanon in 2007, the collective has published 18 magazines, seven comic anthologies, six graphic novels, a collection of eight online comics for teenagers in Arabic and three zines. Since its inception, Samandal has organized many comic-related events, including numerous workshops on storytelling techniques and book and zine production, several residency projects and a number of comic exhibitions in Beirut, Berlin, Paris, Lyon, London, Angoulême and Brussels. The collective received the audience award at ELCAF London (2018) as well as the Fauve of Alternative Comics at the Angoulême International Comics Festival, the Mahmoud Kahil’s Comics Guardian Award and Unesco Sharjah for Arab Culture Award in 2019. Samandal is an alternative platform for expression on social issues through comics. The collective represents a platform for freedom of expression and the liberty for artists in their creativity. Samandal’s comics are multilingual, primarily available in Arabic, French and English. In addition, Samandal works include contributions and collaborations with external artists, literary organizations such as Assabil, giving workshops for school children and young professionals.
