Two.Five is a Cairo-based cinema laboratory that organizes an analog short film competition built around a constraint-based shooting methodology (1x silent film cartridge, in-camera edits only). Founded in 2023 by visual artists Lena Naassana and Mena Assad, Two.Five operates within Egypt's alternative cultural scene, and is dedicated to supporting emerging filmmakers through accessible, process-driven approaches to cinema, with a particular focus on analog film practices. The core mission of Two.Five is to inspire and facilitate alternative approaches to film production, challenging the assumptions of a film industry dominated by advertising and ultra-commercial productions. Its programs are designed to encourage experimentation, resourcefulness, and critical engagement with the moving image, while addressing structural gaps in access to equipment, training, and professional networks. Its central program is a biennial short film competition, built around a specific constraint-based methodology: participants are invited to produce a 2.5-minute film using a single roll of Super 8 or 16mm, without recorded sound, and entirely through in-camera editing. Following an open call, selected participants take part in a structured development program that includes workshops, mentorship, and technical training, followed by closely supervised production and post-production processes.

Beyond the competition, Two.Five operates year-round as one of the few cinema laboratories in the MENA region, offering services including motion picture film processing, telecine transfer, and digital post-production for Super 8 and 16mm formats. It operates out of Studio Totale, a collective of Cairo-based arts and culture initiatives working at the intersection of photography, design, and cinema, including sister initiatives The Laboratory and Kino Cairo, as well as Cairo Collective, Studio Sinar, and the Farouk Ibrahim Archive.
