Shirwmir

Syria
Shirwmir is a free, independent quarterly magazine for a borderless movement belonging solely to the imagination. It approaches poetry written in Arabic from a post-genocide and post-massacre perspective, at a time where the notion of national identity has been defeated. The magazine positions its practice in opposition to institutional poetry and to poetry that places itself in service of power and authoritarianism, while seeking to challenge hate speech in all its racial, religious, and gendered forms. Shirwmir works beyond the binary distinction between the metered, vertical and syllabic poetry, as opposed to free and prosaic poetry —- foregrounding, instead, experimentation, play, and disruption as fundamental principles of poetry.
