The Music Intelligence Lab (MIL) is a research and creative lab based at the American University of Beirut, hosted in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, collaborating closely with the Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences. Established in 2024, the lab was founded to explore how music, technology and intelligence intersect, with a particular focus on bridging artistic practice, scientific research and cultural heritage. MIL's mission is to develop new ways of understanding and creating music by combining embodied performance, mathematical structure and computational intelligence. Its objectives include designing novel musical instruments and interfaces, advancing generative AI for music composition and improvisation, and conducting data-driven analysis of Arabic and global musical traditions. A core emphasis is ensuring that emerging music technologies reflect and evolve local cultural identities rather than replace them. Since its founding, MIL has initiated multiple interdisciplinary projects involving musicians, engineers, dancers and researchers, including experimental electronic instruments, algorithmic studies of musical structure and open digital platforms, such as an interactive Arabic Maqam archive. The lab also plays a strong educational role, training undergraduate and graduate students through research-based learning and collaborative projects. Through research, artistic production and community engagement, MIL aims to position Lebanon and the Arab region as active contributors to the future of music innovation.
