Merath

Libya

Merath is a transregional art and research collective of anthropologists, artists, historians and designers working itinerantly across the Sahara and Mediterranean with a permanent studio in Tripoli, Libya. Our practice is grounded in the material realities of this region, where economic fragmentation and logistical constraints are both our primary obstacles and main sites of creative inquiry.

We operate simultaneously as a platform and a creative studio. We build the logistical networks necessary to circulate knowledge— independent publishing, organising and defining archival collections, training programs, and financial models for cultural production—and then use these very systems as the subject of our art practice.

From performance works that act as live audits of our logistics to long-term research on the Currencies of the Sahara, Merath treats the economy of art as a medium in itself. By formalizing these internal strategies into public resources, exhibitions, books, art works and an evolving syllabus of workshops, we bridge resonant contexts to the sedimented and shifting values of our wider context.
