Two AFAC grantees will screen their film during the upcoming 71st Locarno Film Festival, to be held from August 1 to 11, 2018 in Locarno, Switzerland: Sara Fattahi (Syria), presenting her documentary Chaos in the Concorso Cineasti del presente, and Ghassan Halawani (Lebanon) showcasing his cinema production Erased, Ascent of the Invisible in the Signs of Life section.
Fattahi’s Chaos narrates the story of three women in different cities, sharing a distressed situation: one living in Damascus and seeking refuge in silence since her son’s death in the way, the second exiled from Damascus and hiding in Sweden, and the third facing an unknown future in Vienna. Chaos is a conversation between the interior and the exterior; an impossible conversation.
In Erased, Ascent of the Invisible (Cinema, Visual Arts category), taking Beirut as the scene, a drifter unearths people who disappeared in the Lebanese Civil War by discovering their traces and making the effort to scratch beyond the surface of what has come to represent the new ideals of reconstructed Beirut.
A third Arab film, Yara by Abbas Fahdel, will participate in the festival’s Concorso Internazionale.
