ARTLAB Beirut will be hosting Rawan Mazeh’s solo Photography Exhibition “In Their Place” from the 13th of September to the 6th of October 2018. “In Their Place” was developed in the framework of the Arab Documentary Photography Program launched by AFAC and the Prince Claus Fund in partnership with the Magnum Foundation.
This series strives to build a bridge to tell the untold stories of those that remained in the shadows hiding and intimidated, too afraid to stand up on their own, fearing they would join those who lost their lives and suffered incomparable losses. Through this series, Mazeh puts herself in their place and step in the landmine and remnant zones; she follows the memories sitting in drawers, covered with daily routine objects and belongings; and she faces the human remains: injured, mentally ill, and traumatized. These memories are backed up by constant reminders saved from one generation to another, taking the form of objects which end up being considered part of their heritage and belonging.
And while life goes on, these people, memories, and places stay still, standing where their shoes were left, frozen in the past tense.
