Abbas Fahdel is a French-Iraqi filmmaker and writer born in Babylon governorate, Iraq. He holds a PhD in Cinema from the Sorbonne University in Paris. He has been dedicated to filmmaking since 2002, creating documentaries and narrative films that have won awards at numerous international festivals. He directed three documentaries in Iraq, the most renowned being Homeland: Iraq Year Zero (2015). His first feature-length narrative film, Dawn of the World (2008), was shot in Egypt. Since his move to Lebanon in 2017, he has directed four films: the romance/drama feature Yara (2018), and three documentary features, Bitter Bread (2019), Tales of the Purple House (2022), and Tales of the Wounded Land ( 2025), which received the Best Direction Award in the International Competition at the Locarno Film Festival 2025.
