Ala is a Sudanese photographer, curator and educator whose work actively engages with his home country, Sudan. Through documentary photography, he creates personal narratives rooted in everyday life, reflecting memory, identity and the social realities shaped by revolution, war, displacement and migration.
Alongside his practice, Ala has worked continuously with major photography organizations, including Market Photo Workshop, Africa Foto Fair and World Press Photo, contributing as an educator, mentor, advisor and jury member. He has also been deeply engaged with Sudanese photography archives, researching, restoring and exhibiting the work of photographers such as Elsharif Aboud and Abbas Habiballah.
Ala is actively involved in training and networking photographers across Africa through initiatives such as the Centers of Learning for Photography in Africa in Johannesburg. He currently runs The Other Vision (TOV), a photography education platform dedicated to supporting young Sudanese photographers, connecting them to continental networks and using photography as a tool to engage the public around social change in Sudan.
