Karim Moussaoui is an Algerian filmmaker. He is the author of three short films and a medium length feature The Days Before (2014). The film was screened at Locarno, Clermont-Ferrand and Brive film festivals, in addition to taking the Great Prize at the Angers European First Film Festival and being nominated in the Best Short Film Category at the César Awards. The screenplay for Karim’s first feature-length film Until the Birds Return (2017) won a 2016 Gan Foundation award. The film was developed as part of the Cinefondation residency at the Cannes Film Festival and Les Ateliers d’Angers and was screened in the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.
Karim is a founding member of the Chrysalide Cultural Association for Cinema Promotion in Algiers and has been responsible for cinema programming at the French Institute in Algiers for several years.
In 2020, he directed the short film Les Divas du Taguerabt for the 3e Scène of the Opéra de Paris. The film explored the role of opera in Algerian musical culture and was part of a larger collective film entitled Celles qui chantent.
In 2024, his second feature The Vanishing, starring Sammy Lechea, premiered at the 17th Angoulême Francophone Film Festival.
