Amina Menia is an Algerian mixed-media artist living in Algiers whose work explores the relationships between memory, local history and architecture in post-colonial Algeria. Working across sculpture, photography and installation, her architectural interventions invite viewers to reconsider how public space is shaped and experienced. In her work, she revisits urban myths, engages with the contested narratives of post colonial history, and examines the political potential of spatial voids in built environments.
Amina’s work has been exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the Museum of Contemporary Art and MuCEM in Marseille; the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin; the Museum of African Design in Johannesburg; the New Museum in New York; and the Museum of Modern Art of Algiers. She has also participated in international art events such as the 11th Sharjah Biennale (2013), Dak’Art – 11th Biennale of Contemporary African Art (2014), the Folkestone Triennial (2014), and the Bruges Triennial (2015).
Selected solo exhibitions include Un Écorché at Art-cade Gallery, Marseille, and Extra Muros, Chapter 1 at Bastion 23 Art Center, Algiers.
