Documentary Film - 2025

Marouan Omara is a filmmaker, curator and educator who has actively promoted Arab and African cinema.

His latest feature film, Dreamaway (2018) won the Egyptian Critics Association prize for the best Egyptian film released in cinemas in 2019 and was shortlisted to be Egypt’s official Oscar nomination. His works have also been screened at a variety of international film festivals, including the Berlinale, the Cairo International Film Festival, the Chicago International Film Festival, DOK Leipzig, Encounters, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, Kasseler Dokfest, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the BFI - London Film Festival, the Moscow International Documentary Film Festival, Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal, and the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.

Marouan has lectured on film at various institutions and universities since 2012, including the German University in Cairo, FilmArche Berlin, the American University in Cairo, Jesuit Film School Cairo and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund. Currently, he is an assistant professor and course director, leading the Film Production BA program at Coventry University's Cairo campus, known as The Knowledge Hub (TKH).

He has contributed to a number of cultural institutions, including the International Documentary Association, the Doha Film Institute, the Hot Docs-Blue Ice Film Fund, Rough Cut Lab Africa and the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. He also co-founded A Kiss in the Desert, an Egyptian collective that nurtures emerging filmmakers. He is currently the programming director of the Short Film Competition Program at the Cairo International Film Festival.
