Ikbal Zalila holds a PhD in film studies from the Sorbonne university. He teaches film aesthetics, film analysis, documentary at ISAMM university since 2001. His academic research is focused on two main topics: form and resistance in Arab cinema, and documentary praxis and didactics.

In 2014, he was appointed as artistic director of the Carthage film festival after being a senior programmer for this festival in 2008 and 2010. He is the artistic director of Gabés Cinéma Fenn since 2020. Zalila is a film critic and a former President of the Tunisian association for film critics. He was a member of several critics’ juries in Venice, Istanbul and Rotterdam. He is a trainer in documentary workshops organized by the international Documentary film festival of Agadir.
