The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture – AFAC- offers its deep condolences for the loss of the dear friend and fellow partner in the contemporary Arab cultural field, Ali Shaath, co-founder of the Arab Digital Expression Foundation. Ali Shaath was a dedicated pioneer in leading independent and free programs for Arab social and cultural development revolving around open source technology. He was the co-founder of the Egyptian Association of Free and Open Software and the mastermind for numerous independent initiatives in Egypt.
Most recently, Ali Shaath was a member of the 2013 AFAC Jury Committee for the Research/Training/Regional Events category (RTR). Thanks to his trust and dynamic support of the most original and courageous of cultural projects, he added immense value to our evaluation process and an enthusiasm that was priceless.
His death is a great loss to all who knew him and had the experience of his dedication to supporting Egyptian youth, Palestinian youth, and independent social movements across the Arab region.
