Gala El Hadidi

Egyptian music written since revolution premiers at Cadogan Hall

22 Oct, 2013

An evening of eclectic Egyptian music at Cadogan Hall will see the world premier of classical works written by Egyptian musicians since 2011, capturing the spirit in their country since the revolution. They include a piece by a self-taught 22-year-old from Cairo who first learned to formally compose music from the Internet and another that uses aluminum foil and other household objects to recount the story of protesters detained for four days in prison.

Also performing in the concert that will raise funds for Egyptian children are mezzo-soprano and winner of BBC Cardiff’s 2013 Singer of the World Competition, Gala El Hadidi; Nass Makan, a traditional folk music group; and the Egyptian Contemporary Classical Music Ensemble, an eight-piece collective that will play the newly composed pieces for the first time outside of Egypt.
