The first book fair in Baghdad since 25 years

05 May, 2011

The Baghdad book fair, which was held for the first time in 25 years, closes today (Thursday 5 May 2011). Despite an unpredictable security situation, 241 publishers from 32 countries participated in the fair.

“The special presence of the Lebanese publishers in the fair reminds us of what used to be said for decades about the Arab intellectual movement: Cairo writes, Beirut prints, and Baghdad reads,” writes Al-Hayat newspaper.

The fair, which ran under the slogan “Because Knowledge is Our Identity,” was sponsored by the Iraqi ministry of culture, and showcased more than 32,000 titles including “some new and important sociology, history, politics, psychology and children's works, benefiting mostly university and higher education students, academics, and intellectuals.”
