Babylon Cult Art's "L’Eloge du Corps” at the Fes International Dance Festival

20 Jan, 2011

Director of Fes International Dance Festival talks about "L’Eloge du Corps”

Towards the end of October 2010, the Moroccan city of Fes hosted the fourth edition of the International Dance Festival entitled "l’Eloge du Corps” or “In Praise of the Body”, which was organized by 2009 AFAC grantee Babylon Cult-Art. Aziz El Hakem, director of the festival, himself a Moroccan dancer and actor, commented in an interview with AFAC that “the Fes International Dance Festival, luckily, forges with every new edition new partnerships and new friends.” Unknown Object

“AFAC’s support for this festival encouraged us to host troupes with a long-standing tradition in choreography, which enriched our program with distinguished and remarkable performances,” he added. For the first time, the festival hosted troupes from Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville and South Africa, in addition to a range of expressive dancers from France, Belgium and Morocco. El Hakem described dancing as “a noble form of art that goes beyond all fictitious borders and illusionary differences and calls for the dedication of body and the purity of spirit.” The Arab world, he says, is rich with performances that could not only entertain but also educate entire nations, at a time where “we are in desperate need for performances that would help us get rid of all this destruction that surrounds us.”
