Laila Hoteit's Basita wins the Best Experimental Film award in Los Angeles

14 Apr, 2011

Basita, a short film by the Lebanese director Laila Hoteit, has won the Best Experimental Film award in The Women's Voices From the Muslim World short-film festival organized in Los Angeles between the 17th and the 19th of March 2011.

Hoteit, an AFAC Arab documentary film program grantee in 2009 for her Documentary Crayons of Askalan, has participated in the festival with an additional film entitled Absent Spaces also chosen as a finalist for the Fiction Film award.

In her description of Basita (click to watch), produced in 2010, Hoteit writes: "It is in the intimate and family spaces where some of the darkest secrets are hidden in order to keep the family united. BASITA is my attempt to reconstruct a souvenir of which I have no elements, of which I have only listened a few sentences to one or another member of my family, so the main goal of this piece is to recreate the fact of what we never talk about, the suicide of a young woman, and give her voice once again years later, through my own voice".
