The Death of Francois Abou Salem

06 Oct, 2011

It brings us great sadness to report the mysterious death of the multi-talented French/Palestinian director, actor, and comedian, Francois Abou Salem. His body was found October 1st, 2011 Saturday evening on the street side in the Tayra District of Ramallah City in the West Bank, where he worked and lived; security forces have yet to establish the cause of death.

Abou Salem was born in 1951 and spent a life-time dedicated to theatre. He co-founded the ‘Al-Hakawati Theatre” in Jerusalem in the 1970’s which later became the National Palestinian Theatre of East Jerusalem. He produced many original works and was active in adapting famous world theatre into the Arabic language.
In 2008, Abou Salem received a grant from AFAC for the theatrical production of ‘King Ubu’, an adaptation from Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi, which was performed throughout Palestine. He will be remembered as a pioneering figure in Palestinian performing arts and Arab theatre.
