From the Exhibition "Mendeel Um A7mad (NxIxSxM)" by Fatima Al Qadiri and Khaled Al Gharaballi

Mendeel Um A7mad Exhibited

15 Feb, 2012

Between January 25th and February 9th, the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) hosted a visual arts installation project by New-York based Kuwaiti artists and AFAC 2011 visual arts grantees Fatima Al Qadiri and Khalid Al Gharaballi. Their multimedia installation called “Mendeel Um A7mad (NxIxSxM)” features a film projected inside a screening room designed in collaboration with Aziz Alqatani and Nanu Al-Hamad as monumental tissue box, an unlikely Kuwaiti national icon.

The artists shot their film in a Kuwait hotel ballroom where the role of four middle-aged women was played by a cast of younger men – homage to the legacy of actor Abdul-Aziz Al Nimish who for decades performed female roles when it was viewed as unseemly for women to perform in public. Using the pre-noon tea ritual, Chai Dhaha, to explore the notion of gendered space, the project follows the artists’ interest in re-enacting private social scenes through fantasy-based performances.
