The Brunei Gallery at SOAS in London is currently exhibiting the AFAC-funded project “Disappearing Heritage of Sudan - 1820 – 1956” by Frederique Cifuentes.
Between 2004 and 2010, Cifuentes conducted fieldwork and research of the visual documentation on Sudan, compiling a unique collection of photographs and films covering the periods of Ottoman, Egyptian and British colonization. The photographs and videos of the exhibition explore the mechanics of empires on the urban landscape. Surveying Sudan’s official buildings, private residencies, cinema houses, railways, irrigation canals, and bridges, the exhibition highlights the impact of colonial construction and design on Sudanese society before and after Independence in 1956.
The Exhibition is open to the public until June 24, 2012.
