Last month brought a lot of excitement for the Arab performing arts scene when an artist and a collective were celebrated by prominent international festivals.
AFAC Grantee Tania El Khoury was named the winner of the 2017 ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art, announced at the ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival in Kuopio, Finland on Saturday 23 September and a week before that, another AFAC grantee, Zoukak Theatre Company won the Japan Art Association Praemium Imperiale during a ceremony held in New York.
Tania El Khoury is a live artist working in London and Beirut. She creates interactive installations and performances in which the audience is an active collaborator. Tania’s work has been shown in five continents in spaces ranging from museums to cable cars. She has been nominated to a number of awards and is the recipient of the Total Theatre Innovation Award and the Arches Brick Award.
Zoukak Theater Company was founded in 2006 by seven artists from a need to develop a professional continuity for theater as a practice, a belief in this practice as a political and social involvement and a faith in collectivism as an action against marginalizing systems.
