In Dalaa Al Mufti’s interview in Al-Qabas Newspaper with Oussama Rifahi on the 19th of June 2011, the executive director of AFAC gave a brief about the Fund’s history, Goals, and grants categories, and explained its conditions and evaluation process.
Answering Al Mufti’s question about the reason behind AFAC’s focus on arts and culture in an Arab world where many of the basic needs are still not fulfilled, Rifahi was quoted saying that “creativity and innovation are not scarce in the Arab World. Nevertheless, many of the Arab artists and cultural practitioners are not able to reach the audience and express their creativity due to the lack of funding, as the majority of the Arab and international resources are directed to tackle the social and economic problems of the Arab world. As a result of this marginalization of arts and culture, the Arab artists and cultural institutions were left to face the instability of this sector, and compete to get funds from the non-profit western organizations. Facing this reality, it was necessary to take the initiative and benefit from these resources and capabilities and develop new forms of local financial support in order to empower culture and insure its sustainability. ”
