Monday, September 12, 2011 - To support artistic projects emerging from the current situation of turmoil and transformation sweeping the Arab world, AFAC launches two new programs – AFAC Express and Crossroads.
AFAC Express is aimed for Arab artists of all genres who are openly addressing issues previously considered taboo – such as human rights, corruption, accountability and freedom - and are overcoming fear and censorship while maintaining artistic integrity and creativity that is indicative of a healthy vision for the future. Preference will be given to artists who are facing difficulty in completing their work as a direct result of the political changes taking place.
Crossroads is dedicated to independent Arab filmmakers who are living through the challenging transformations that Arab societies are currently facing and are on the frontiers of dealing with the nuances of change. Filmmaking is singled out in Crossroads precisely because of the unprecedented proliferation of visual media within the context of the current turmoil. The program seeks to attract Arab filmmakers of all genres (fiction features, feature-length documentaries, fiction shorts, experimental films, animation…etc) and will offer funding as well as access to expert consultants within an atmosphere of open and creative discussion.
The spirit of openness and creativity that is emerging even in the darkest hours of instability and fear is a rare and delicate moment that needs to be supported more expediently. That is why these two new programs will be processing their applications on a rolling deadline. Projects will be forwarded to an independent selection committee for consideration upon submission. Applicants are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as their project proposals are ready, as the selection process will be ongoing throughout and after the close of the open call.
